I read of poets praised and wondered

why?

his words/her words encompassed all

the world was and should not be

their fame has outshone their years

writing of sordid, paltry trifles

less crucial than selfishness

neither as enduring as pettiness

mere words of mere … reaction

with no thought but self behind

who were these

who wrote such … things

and should I care

if their response to their world

was more or less honest than

is mine to my own

I read their words and still I wonder

why?
