March 1989

the grief hides deep

behind smiles

at long last

returned

buried beneath layers of me

none could ever touch

it is there

in the midst of me

a darkness

a fear

lives and breaths

and has its life

far behind what others see

never told in what they hear

mine

mine alone this pain

that slowly

       oh so slowly

dies
