We Die Together

on the deaths of Sgt. 1st Class John Thomas Stone (USA) and Pte. Rob Costall (Canada)

we die together, ours and theirs

brothers separated by a mere imaginary line

scribed across this vast continent

whose blood released

to free a foreign land

erases even that distinction

more alike than different

heroes who knew the risk

and took it

that strangers might have a share

in their freedom

“no greater love exists

that one should lay down his life

for an other”
