Were it not for God

in the beginning

before all that is

was

when nothing was of greater weight

that what was not

even nothing could not have been

were it not for God

in our sadnesses

as grief bears fleeting

smiles

when despair is of greater weight

than life itself

even life could not continue

were it not for God

in our exulting

amid our purest

joy

when gloom is fled far and distant

unremembered

even thanks would be undone

were it not for God
