Your Tears

(to Susan Moratz)

you called this morning, unexpectedly

a friend, concerned, to see how we were

doing after the fall of Sunday

telling of your appreciation

for us and all we’ve done

a high and lofty sentiment, noble

and easily doubted amidst the pain

but your tears, filling your words,

gave sentimentality flesh and blood

made it real and gave it life

may Heaven treasure them

for through your tears I am saved

and no longer greatly fear my friends
