Victus!

..for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost...

Out of the night that covered me,

beyond the pit that claimed me whole;

I thank God, who Alone Must Be,

that He has freed my conquered soul.

Beneath fell weight of God’s just vow,

my heart in fearful torment fled.

Yet He bore my curse on His brow;

I am restored because He bled!

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

loomed death and horror of the shade.

Thank God! He carried all my fears;

by His grace I am unafraid.

It matters not how strait His gate,

how charged with punishments His scroll.

His love has saved me from my fate;

He is the Saviour of my soul.

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.
