Notes on Victus!
In Sunday School on the morning of Dec. 6, 2009, during his excellent series on Revelation, Don Symon introduced us to the hopelessness of a life that has rejected God; as shown in the poem "Invictus," by William Ernest Henley. I was immediately moved to write a poem in response and came up with a rough first draft just seconds before Don introduced us to the hopefullness of a life that has accepted God; as shown in the poem "The Captain," by Dorothea Day. I have tried to keep the words of Dorothea's poem from influencing my own and think I have succeeded. You can see for yourself by clicking here to see all three poems side by side.
I have also written the poem "My Captain" which encompasses several of Dorothea Day's ideas.
I'm not sure which I like more, but believe any of them is vastly superior, spiritually, to Henley's.
