words fail me

what could I say

how could I know

what it is that now you need

I have never seen the cross

that now you're called to bear

we who've shared our laughter

            so recently as New Years

must now share tears

mine as real as yours

they're all that I can do

I pray that they're enough

how else can I help you

my dearest friend

you spoke of faith

that God's way is right

            so recently as New Years

I pray it is so now

all I can give

is words and tears

but both are from the heart
