CHRONICLES OF NARNIA

(see A Word on the Theology of C. S. Lewis)

Here is a list of the seven volumes of the Chronicles of Narnia with a (very) brief synopsis as well as a copy of the original cover art by Pauline Baynes. Each image links to a larger copy.

The Magician's Nephew ~ In which a friendship is formed, a mistake is made, a world is created and forgiveness is given.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe ~ Continues the story begun in The Magician's Nephew many generations later when four children, two brothers and two sisters, accidentally visit Narnia when attempting to hide in a wardrobe. Their involvement in the redemption of Narnia leads to their becoming kings and queens under the great King Aslan.

For my take on how C. S. Lewis dealt with witches, wizards and such in a better and more Christian manner than either J. R. R. Tolkien or J. K. Rowling click on this link.

The Horse and His Boy ~ Takes place during the reign of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy over Narnia and tells the story of a boy who is stolen by a talking horse longing to return to his native Narnia and the adventures they encounter as they travel and begin to see themselves as they really are.

Prince Caspian ~ Set many generations after The Horse and His Boy the story centers around Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy being recalled to Narnia at a time of great distress to help  place the legitimate ruler of Narnia upon his throne. In some ways it seems a novelization of the British concept of King Arthur as the "Once and Future King" and the longing for King Arthur to return and make things right.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ~ Edmund, Lucy and their cousin Eustace are transported to Narnia through a painting and are taken on board the Dawn Treader, Prince Caspian's ship as he sails the seas looking for the seven lords his Uncle Miraz had banished years before. Through a series of misfortunes and adventures Eustace discovers himself and salvation.

The Silver Chair ~ Two young children, Eustace and Jill are sent to Narnia by Aslan to search for the missing heir to the throne of Narnia, Prince Caspian's son Rilian. Atypical of the average adventure stories our heroes are truly human and succeed in spite of themselves and then only when they follow Aslan completely.

The Last Battle ~ All previous characters are reunited at the destruction of the world of Narnia, all worlds in fact, and their transition into the Heavenly realm is portrayed. A very beautiful book, even if Narnia has been destroyed, if only for the fact The Last Battle shows that what follows is far better than what is.
