it’s hard to get off of it, once you’re on it

that escalator just keeps going up & up & up

and faster, as the day progresses downward

what wouldn’t have mattered a week ago

so trivial and insubstantial you could forget

eclipses life like some vast, dark shadow

and no matter how hard you try to get off

you’re powerless on this stupid escalator
