On John Mayer’s “In the Blood”

John Mayer beautifully asks

“Will it wash out in the water,

or is it always in the blood?”

this is a question that grabs

at us, makes each of us think

just a bit more of what we are

is what I am irrevocably me

with inheritance unchanging

or

is what I am changeably me

with inheritance unbinding

being a theologian, I know

have learned that water cleans

washes white every stain of blood

and in answer to John Mayer I say

“Yes!”

“Yes, it will wash out in the water!”

and “No!”

“No, it need not be always in the blood!”

this choice, as with every other

is ever and always ours

the Water, He has been given

we need only believe
