I did not want to go skiing

I did not want to go at all

yesterday

was carried along on the wave

of Beth and Andy's enthusiasm

it was cold and I was warm

and my books were calling me

so was the poem I'd set aside

to finish at a quiet moment

and it's so hard to try to even

want to leave the house

some days

that even when we got there

boots toed into the skis

pleasure was not at all nearby

delight was distantly remote

and joy a determined stranger

I did not want to go skiing

I did not want to go at all

yesterday

even though I'd brought my camera

I told them I'd not be using it

mind and body in no shape for joy

but after far too short a time

I noticed the trees

covered in this week's snow

stood far too lovely to ignore

I noticed the sun

ablaze on a field of perfect blue

touched the snow like gems

and the camera, reluctantly

founds its way out of its bag

and my smile, reluctantly

found its way onto my face

no

I did not want to go skiing

I did not want to go at all

but that was yesterday
