Betrayed

what has brought me to this place?

what possessed me to do the thing I did?

he was my friend, my teacher, my hope

I loved that man, I followed, I learned

I saw the wonderful things he did

I heard the wonderful words he spoke

I was of those he sent to teach, to heal

yet it was I who greeted him, treacherous

and now, now it is far too late to help him

and those who could, who should help me

fail to live up to the calling of their place

and I am alone, alone as any man ever was

my only witness, this silent, unfertile field

in which, at this bitter end of all joy, I weep

hopeless, for I have betrayed my only help
