Naming Things After Me

(on recognition of an astounding arrogance)

you shouldn’t name things after me

once I’m dead and gone

I won’t know

‘cause I’ll be dead

but even if I do

I won’t care

‘cause I’ll be in Heaven

but even if I do

it won’t matter

‘cause I’ll just say “Here, God

this is yours.”

you shouldn’t name things after me

if I’m here and breathing

I would know

‘cause I’m vain

and even if I weren’t

I would care

‘cause I’m proud

but even if I were

it wouldn’t matter

‘cause I’d just say “Here, God

this is yours.”

you shouldn’t name things after me

but maybe give them to God instead

since every good and perfect thing

and even imperfect things like me

are God’s things, and God’s alone
