No Joke!

He is no joke

no part of His story

of anything He has done

is either joke, or joke-worthy

yes, there is humour

yes, there are smiles

He made our lips to curve up

after all

and we are echoes of Himself

and I can just imagine Jesus laughing

on Peter’s boat, hauling in the fish He’d called

or beside the widow, as her son came to life again

or beside Mary and Martha, as He turned grief to joy

but

no part of anything He did or does

no part of anything He said or says

no part of anything He made or makes

is for a joke

is for our sad need to laugh, cheaply

it is all, ALL of it

that all, ALL of us

may see, Him

may love, Him

may trust, Him

making jokes at His expense

mocks Him

reduces us

threatens all
